OpenAI Just Split One Model Into Three

OpenAI split GPT-5.6 into three distinct models, each built for a different job.

Sol is the powerhouse. Terra is the balanced workhorse. Luna is the fast, cheap option. Sol hits SOTA on reasoning benchmarks. Terra delivers GPT-5.5 performance at half the cost. Luna gets the job done for a dollar per million input tokens.

The reason this matters is that companies are starting to care less about having one best model and more about having the right model for the job. A coding task doesn’t need the most powerful reasoning engine. A customer support chatbot doesn’t need SOTA benchmarks. An internal analysis tool needs speed more than perfect accuracy. Three models let you match compute to task instead of buying the top tier for everything.

This is the opposite of the old playbook. For years, the race was singular. Who has the best model? Now it’s a three-way optimization problem that’s actually harder to solve. You’re balancing price, speed, and capability simultaneously, and different teams need different trade-offs.

The catch is access. As of July 6, these are available only to about 20 government-vetted organizations. OpenAI says broader access comes in the coming weeks, but the staged rollout signals something happening in the background. National security reviews, government testing protocols, something. Not malice, but process.

The pricing is real. Sol costs five times more per token than Luna. That’s a meaningful budget trade-off for a company running millions of queries. But Luna at one dollar per million? That’s when you stop worrying about LLM inference cost and start worrying about how many queries you actually need to run to do the job.
