Anthropic Just Opened Its Own Drug Lab

Anthropic is not just building AI models anymore. It’s building a drug discovery lab.

They launched Claude Science, a workbench that connects Claude Opus to more than 60 preconfigured tools across genomics, proteomics, structural biology, and cheminformatics. One platform. Everything a researcher needs to move from idea to experiment to result in a single session.

But here’s the part that matters: they’re also running their own drug discovery program, targeting diseases that traditional pharma ignores because the economics don’t work. Neglected tropical diseases. Rare genetic conditions. The kinds of problems that save lives but don’t hit quarterly targets.

This is significant because no AI-discovered drug has completed a large-scale clinical trial yet. Anthropic is betting that Claude plus the right tools plus in-house domain expertise equals something that works. They’re putting research grants on it. Up to 50 projects, 30k in credits each, closing July 15. Early customers include Novo Nordisk and the Allen Institute.

The broader pattern is what gets interesting. A year ago, AI labs were software companies building models. Now they’re spreading into biotech, infrastructure, robotics, energy. That’s not feature creep. That’s a shift in what these companies think they should be building.

The question is whether moving fast and breaking things works in biotech, where you’re moving into regulatory territory and real-world safety. Anthropic seems to think it does. We’ll find out when the first results land.
