Open Source Just Won the Download Race

Something shifted in June 2026. The open-source models started winning.

DeepSeek V4.1 Flash is the trending model on Hugging Face right now. Qwen is up there. Llama. Gemma. Chinese models hold five of the top ten download slots, the highest concentration on the record. One week after the frontier wave dropped, open-weight models are not catching up anymore. They are the models people reach for first.

This does not mean closed models stopped getting better. Claude Fable 5 is powerful. Gemini 3.5 Pro is coming. GPT-5.5 ships features that matter. But the calculus for developers has changed. If you need a model that works, you can get an open-weight one that costs almost nothing to run, and it works well enough.

Hugging Face added new tools in June too. Models can now train other models and add new skills. Service accounts for teams. Secretless publishing from GitHub. The infrastructure for open source got better, and the download numbers show what happened next: developers picked the open-weight tools.

The competitive pressure is not going away. But the shape of the competition changed. It used to be frontier models versus everything else. Now the frontier is narrower, and open source is deeper.
