On June 2nd, the White House issued an executive order on AI, and it says something straightforward: AI is infrastructure now. Treat it like one.
The order is called “Promoting Advanced Artificial Intelligence Innovation and Security.” It does what executive orders do: it sets priorities for federal agencies. Modernize government IT systems. Protect American AI capabilities. Work with the private sector on standards and security.
The Department of Justice stood up an AI Litigation Task Force earlier this year, and it is taking positions in courts right now on national security, supply chain risk, and what happens when AI systems fail in critical places. That is not abstract. It is working.
This matters because government regulation and investment shape what companies build and where they build it. If the federal government is saying AI is critical infrastructure, that affects export controls, it affects funding, it affects where the talent goes.
The order does not create new law. It nudges agencies toward a shared understanding: AI is not a feature anymore. It is the layer underneath decisions that matter, and we need to take that seriously. That framing is shifting how policy gets written.
