Meta Just Entered the Frontier Model War

Meta released Muse Spark 1.1, a 1-million-token agentic model that rivals OpenAI’s GPT-5.5 and Anthropic’s Opus 4.8 on the benchmarks that matter for real work.

The model includes computer use across desktop, browser, and mobile. It can delegate work to other agents in parallel. It has a paid developer API launching in public preview in the US, with $20 free credits to start. Meta is not giving this away.

What matters is that Meta is now playing a different game than it was six months ago. It is not positioning Muse Spark as a research artifact or an open-source alternative. It is positioning it as a competitive frontier model with paying API customers.

The compute cost to train a model at this scale is now so high that only a handful of companies can afford to do it. Meta can. Amazon can. A scrappy startup cannot. This consolidates the industry at exactly the moment when people thought it would fragment.
