Boston Dynamics’ Robot Dog Just Got Smarter Than We Expected

Boston Dynamics equipped Spot-the quadruped robot-with Google DeepMind’s advanced reasoning model. Spot can now look at a factory floor and think for itself.

This is different than before. Old Spot was a camera on legs. You told it where to go, what to look for. New Spot watches a valve, reads a gauge, sees dangerous spills, and makes decisions about what matters. It doesn’t need a human to interpret every image.

The trick is Gemini Robotics-ER 1.6. It’s a foundation model built to understand physical space the way robots need to-not just pictures, but reasoning about pressure, safety, cost, and sequence. When Spot sees something it doesn’t understand, it can ask for help. When it understands, it acts.

Industrial sites have massive amounts of data they can’t process fast enough. Humans walk the floor, take notes, report back. Spot does that, but continuously and without getting tired. More important: Spot can prioritize. A spill near the chemistry station gets flagged different than a spill near the break room.

The reason this matters is scale. Right now, industrial automation is expensive and rigid. Spot changes that. Cheaper robots running smarter reasoning means industrial companies can automate tasks that never made economic sense before.
