Korea’s Building Its Own AI Supercomputer

NAVER just announced something quiet but significant. They’re building sovereign AI infrastructure at gigawatt scale with NVIDIA, starting at 55 megawatts in Korea.

This matters because it’s not just about compute. NAVER is taking NVIDIA’s Nemotron 3 model and fine-tuning it with Korean data and expertise to build HyperCLOVA X, their own frontier model that competes globally. They’re the first Korean company in NVIDIA’s Nemotron Coalition, which means they’re contributing back to the open model ecosystem.

The real story here is vertical integration at scale. Countries and companies are no longer just buying AI from the US. They’re building their own stacks, their own models, their own infrastructure. NAVER’s move signals that the era of single-cloud dominance is ending. Regional players with capital and engineering are building alternatives.

This is how the market matures. You need infrastructure, models, fine-tuning, and regional optimization. NAVER is betting they can do all of it better for Korean and Asian enterprises than anyone else can from across the ocean.
