A store in San Francisco just got a new kind of manager, and this week it did something no AI has done before out in the open. It fired someone.
The manager is called Luna, an AI agent built by Andon Labs, running on Anthropic’s Claude Opus 4.8. Andon Labs gave it a real budget, a company credit card, and control over hiring, pricing, and staffing at a small shop called Andon Market. The idea was simple: see how far an AI can actually run a business.
One employee missed 17 of 23 shifts. Luna had already given warnings and extra training, but it lost track of its own policy for a while and did not follow through right away. Once its team prompted it to review the record, Luna recommended parting ways with that employee. A human at the company reviewed the call and carried it out.
That last part matters. This was not a machine acting alone in the dark. A person still checked the decision before anyone actually lost a job. That is the version of this story worth paying attention to, an AI making a hard call with a human still holding the line before it becomes final.
I get why the headline sounds unsettling. An algorithm deciding who keeps their paycheck touches something raw. But look at what actually happened. The AI followed its own stated rules, warned first, trained first, and only acted after real repeated failures. That is closer to a fair manager than plenty of us have had.
The bigger story is not that an AI can fire someone. It is that a company let one run payroll, purchasing, and staffing for months and the business is still standing. That is the actual test, and so far it is passing.
I do not think this becomes the norm overnight. But it tells us something about where the guardrails need to sit as AI takes on more of the boring, high stakes parts of running a company.
