Somebody finally said the quiet part out loud, and it was the CEO of one of the companies at the center of the argument. Dario Amodei has spent the last couple of years warning publicly about what could go wrong with the AI his own company builds. An investor named Gavin Baker argued recently, on a podcast and then again on X, that this kind of talk is part of why the public turned against AI in the first place, especially the fight over new data centers going up in people’s backyards.
Amodei answered on X, and it says something worth thinking about. He called it fundamentally a crisis of trust. His point was that ordinary people do not trust companies, governments, or the tech industry in general, and they assume anyone in a position of power is cooking up some new way to take advantage of them. That feeling did not start with AI, and one company changing how it talks will not be enough to fix it on its own.
He made another point worth remembering. An ad claiming AI will cure cancer would get dismissed as marketing spin, and people would be right to dismiss it. What actually rebuilds trust is AI curing cancer, for real, in a way people can see and check for themselves over time.
The skepticism people feel is bigger than AI. It comes from years of big institutions promising something and delivering less, and AI just landed in the middle of that history. Amodei’s read is that no slogan closes that gap. Showing up and doing the thing you said you would do, long enough for people to notice, is the only thing that ever has.
