Nvidia just agreed to back roughly $105 billion in financing for a new OpenAI data center going up in Pike County, Ohio. Not $105 billion in cash from Nvidia’s own pocket, a guarantee, the kind that lets OpenAI borrow that money from banks and investors with Nvidia standing behind the loan.

The plan calls for close to 4.25 gigawatts of computing power at the site, with room to grow past 8 gigawatts total. SB Energy will build and run the facility on a 20 year lease to OpenAI. First power is expected to come online in phases starting in 2028.

Here is the part worth sitting with. Nvidia sells the chips. Nvidia is now also guaranteeing the debt that pays for the building that houses those chips. Reporting says the number started as talk of a $250 billion backstop before it settled closer to $105 billion. Either way, the same company sitting on both ends of the deal is a pattern showing up across this whole industry right now, and it is fair to ask what happens if demand for AI compute ever slows down.

I do not think that makes the deal bad on its own. Someone has to finance power plants, steel, and cooling systems at this scale, and traditional lenders are still cautious about projects this size. Nvidia backing the loan is one way to get shovels in the ground faster.

What I would watch is whether this stays a one-off or becomes the standard way these buildouts get funded. A little circular financing between a handful of giant companies is not a crisis on its own. A lot of it, spread across every major data center project in the country, starts to look like risk nobody outside the deal can actually see.

Compute is the bottleneck for almost everything AI promises next. However this gets financed, more of it coming online is still good news for the rest of us waiting on the other side.
