Most people will never notice this happened, and that is exactly the point.
Model Context Protocol, the open standard that lets AI models like Claude plug into outside tools and data without everyone writing custom connectors, just got its biggest update since it launched. The new spec, dated July 28th, drops the old requirement that a server remember which conversation it is having with which model. Every request now describes itself completely, so any server in a pool can answer any request without keeping a memory of what came before it.
That sounds like a small technical detail, but it changes a lot in practice. It means companies running these tool servers can scale them the plain, cheap way, spreading requests across a pile of interchangeable machines with a basic load balancer, instead of babysitting sticky sessions tied to one server. It also tightens how servers prove who they are to each other, moving closer to standard enterprise login practices instead of ad hoc setups everyone had to invent themselves.
Anthropic, which stewards the protocol, is already rolling support for it into Claude. Amazon has it running inside AgentCore Gateway. When the people building the pipes and the people building the models move on the same update at once, that is usually a sign a standard is actually sticking, not just getting talked about at conferences.
I like this story because it is the unglamorous kind of AI news that actually moves things forward more than the flashy model releases do. Nobody posts a viral clip about a protocol going stateless. But this is why some AI tools hold up reliably at real scale while others fall over the moment too many people show up at once.
The boring infrastructure wins are usually the ones worth paying attention to. This is one of them.
