Over A Thousand AI Workers Just Asked For The Brakes

Something unusual happened this week. Over a thousand employees from the top AI labs, including Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and co-founders from across the industry, put their names on a public letter asking governments to help pace the development of powerful AI.

The letter is called Pacing the Frontier, and 1,178 people signed it, including chief scientists from OpenAI, Meta, Google DeepMind, and Thinking Machines. Anthropic and OpenAI both followed up with their own statements backing it as companies, not just as individuals. The ask is straightforward. Build the technical and governance tools now so the industry does not end up racing so fast that safety testing becomes an afterthought.

What gets me is who is signing this. These are not outside critics. These are the people building the actual models, the ones with the clearest view from the inside of how fast things are moving. When the people closest to the work ask for a way to pace it, that is worth taking seriously.

I know it is easy to be cynical here. Companies signing safety letters while still racing each other toward the next model release can look like talking out of both sides of their mouth. Maybe some of that is happening. But I would rather have engineers and researchers openly asking for guardrails than staying quiet and hoping things work out on their own.

Building AI responsibly and building it fast do not have to cancel each other out. The people who understand this technology best are the ones telling us pacing it well is possible, as long as the actual tools for doing it get built. I am choosing to read that as reassuring, even with all the reasons to stay a little skeptical. Let us hope governments actually pick up what they are being handed here.
