The Biggest AI Lab in China Just Bet on Open

Zhipu AI-which just crossed a trillion-dollar market cap-released its latest flagship model, GLM-5.2, under the MIT open license. No regional locks. No usage restrictions. Free, globally accessible, and highly capable.

Tang Jie, the founder, published an internal memo to employees. His argument: frontier AI must stay open. The memo surfaced just days after news broke that Beijing was considering the opposite-restricting overseas access to China’s advanced open models.

So Zhipu moved the opposite direction. They are forgoing short-term revenue for two years to go all-in on four core bets: long-horizon autonomous tasks, agent systems, AI self-evolution, and extreme safety governance. All of it aimed at AGI.

The subtext matters. In a world where governments are closing doors and companies are walling gardens, a $1 trillion Chinese AI company is handing away its best work and betting the farm on openness and safety. That is either a bold conviction or a signal that the real competition is not about keeping secrets. It is about who builds the safest, most trusted systems.
