OpenAI just made a pretty specific promise. Give 100,000 academic researchers free access to its most capable AI models, and get out of the way while they use it.
The program starts small, 10,000 researchers this summer, then grows toward that 100,000 mark by 2027. Qualifying faculty and postdocs get GPT-5.6 Sol Pro, the company’s top reasoning model, plus Codex for writing and running research software, and more than 75 tools built specifically for genetics, genomics, protein modeling, and drug discovery. Researchers can also bring in up to four collaborators from their own institution, so this spreads through a whole lab, not just one seat, and it connects to scientific papers, genomic databases, and satellite imagery along the way.
OpenAI is backing this with more than $250 million committed through 2027 to support outside scientific work. The stated goal is refreshingly simple. Let scientists chase the problems they actually understand, instead of having a tech company decide what counts as important research.
I like this one because it flips the usual story. Most AI headlines are about a company building something for itself. This is a company handing serious compute to people outside it and stepping back to see what happens. Drug discovery, genomics, protein modeling, these are fields where a faster tool in the right hands can genuinely shave years off real work that helps real people, work that usually moves at the pace of grant cycles and lab budgets, not software releases.
There is a version of this that is just good marketing dressed up as generosity, and OpenAI surely knows how good this looks. But even with mixed motives, the outcome still lands clean. A postdoc somewhere who could never afford frontier model access now has it for free. That is worth being genuinely glad about, whatever else is going on behind it.
