OpenAI Just Cut Cursor Off Over Its SpaceX Deal

Elon Musk bought Cursor. OpenAI just decided that is a good enough reason to walk away.

Cursor’s parent company, Anysphere, got acquired by SpaceX in a $60 billion all-stock deal that closed on August 14. Cursor runs on a mix of AI models, including OpenAI’s, and up to now that relationship worked fine. Then OpenAI told Cursor it is winding the contract down, with access going dark on November 12. That is the longest notice period their contract allowed, so at least it is not an overnight cutoff.

Why walk away from a paying customer? OpenAI’s own explanation is pretty blunt: they do not trust that a Musk-owned company will actually respect the terms of service. They point back to April, when Musk admitted under oath that xAI had taken OpenAI’s outputs and used them to train its own models, breaking rules every other customer has to follow. OpenAI is basically saying once was enough, and they are not doing that dance again.

Cursor’s CEO says OpenAI’s models only make up about 5% of what Cursor’s users actually run, so the product will be fine. He also says the company is still talking with OpenAI, hoping to work something out before November.

Strip away the Musk and Altman history, and there is a plain business lesson sitting underneath it. Access to a frontier model runs on trust as much as on a signed contract. When that trust breaks, even a giant company with deep pockets can find a door closed on it. Cursor will likely be fine either way, it has other model partners and two and a half months to sort out the rest. But this is a reminder that in AI right now, who owns you can matter just as much as what you build.
