Starting today, if you’re using the free version of ChatGPT anywhere in Europe, you’re going to start seeing ads. OpenAI is rolling this out across 31 markets, from Germany down through Spain and Italy and up into Scandinavia. It’s the same ad business the company launched quietly in the US six months ago, now crossing the Atlantic.
Here’s the part I actually like. OpenAI says the ads sit in their own separate lane, boxed off from the chat itself instead of stitched into an answer. You’ll know when you’re looking at something a company paid for versus something the model actually told you.
Advertisers also don’t get your chat history. OpenAI’s VP of ads said plainly that nothing from your conversations gets handed to them for targeting. Whether that holds up over years is a fair question, but it’s the right starting position, especially in a region where GDPR makes a company prove consent instead of assuming it.
If you don’t want any of it, the paid plans stay ad free. Plus runs about 23 euros a month in Europe, Pro sits at 229. Free and Go accounts are the ones who’ll see the ads land in their feed.
I get why people wince at this. A tool that felt like a personal assistant now has a business model bolted onto it, and business models need to make money somewhere. But somebody has to pay for the compute, and I’d rather advertisers cover part of that bill than watch the free tier get priced out of reach for people who need it most.
The honest read is this keeps ChatGPT free for the people who can’t or won’t pay a subscription, while giving OpenAI another leg to stand on besides subscriptions and enterprise deals. That’s a decent trade, as long as the wall between ads and answers actually holds up over time.
