Two of the biggest ideas in AI agents just moved under the same roof. Google handed stewardship of its A2A protocol, the standard that lets one AI agent talk to another, over to the Agentic AI Foundation, the same neutral group that already houses Anthropic’s MCP, the standard that lets an agent reach out and use a tool.
Put plainly: MCP is how an agent grabs a wrench. A2A is how two agents agree on which one is holding it. Having both live under one independent foundation instead of two competing companies means developers building agent products don’t have to bet on whose protocol wins out.
The foundation itself has grown fast, from under fifty member organizations to more than 250 in under a year. AWS, Microsoft, Bloomberg, Cloudflare, and yes, OpenAI, all sit on that same list now, right alongside Google and Anthropic. That’s a strange thing to see, companies who compete for every customer agreeing on the plumbing everyone builds on top of.
This is the boring but important kind of AI news. No flashy model, no demo video. Just an agreement that when your accounting agent needs to hand a task off to your scheduling agent, they’ll speak the same language no matter which lab built either one.
I like seeing this sorted out now instead of five years from now. The early web spent a lot of its life patching around incompatible browsers and file formats because nobody agreed on the rules early enough. Agents are still young enough that getting the shared ground rules right now actually has a real shot at sticking, and that’s worth rooting for even if it never trends on its own.
For anyone building on top of agents, the practical upside is real: less time spent gluing together mismatched systems, more time spent on the actual product.
