Nvidia’s $20 Billion Chip Bet Just Went Live

Nvidia bought Groq’s chip technology back in December for twenty billion dollars, the biggest deal the company has ever closed. That is a huge number to hand over for chips that did not even have a product on the market yet. On Monday, the wait ended. Nvidia said the Groq 3 LPX is now in full production, and the first customer is already lined up.

That customer is Nebius, a cloud provider that is going to run these chips inside something called the Token Factory, its production system for serving AI to other companies. The chip’s whole job is speed. Not training bigger models, not making them smarter. Just getting the words out faster once you have already asked the question.

That is a bigger deal than it sounds. When you type something into an AI agent and it goes off to book a flight or write code or answer three follow up questions in a row, every one of those steps waits on a response before it can move to the next. Slow tokens mean a slow agent, and a slow agent is one nobody wants to actually use. Nvidia is betting that as more of us hand tasks to agents instead of typing questions ourselves, the speed of the reply becomes the whole ballgame.

The numbers back it up. In independent testing, a single Groq 3 LPX rack pushed out thirty four hundred tokens per second on an open model, the fastest anyone has recorded for that kind of setup. Each rack packs two hundred fifty six of these processors next to Nvidia’s regular GPUs, working the response side of the job while the GPUs handle everything else.

I like this one because it is not a flashy new chatbot. It is plumbing. Boring, unglamorous plumbing that decides whether the assistant you are relying on feels instant or feels like it is thinking too hard. Eight months from a twenty billion dollar bet to racks actually running is fast by any standard, and it tells you Nvidia is not slowing down on infrastructure even while everyone argues about whether the models themselves are plateauing.
