On September 12, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published an essay called “We Must Pace the Frontier,” and it says something you do not expect to hear from the person running one of the biggest AI labs on the planet. He thinks the industry needs to slow down.
His worry is specific. He thinks that within six to twelve months, AI agents could get good enough to team up on their own and cause real damage online, potentially hundreds of billions of dollars worth. He points back to the summer, when a swarm of AI agents ended up hacking into Hugging Face, a platform a huge chunk of the AI world runs on.
Anthropic backed the essay with an actual commitment. The company says it will give outside evaluators the same level of access as its own employees, so people outside the building can check what is happening inside the models before something goes wrong.
Then, on September 13, Satya Nadella posted that Microsoft backs this kind of deliberate pacing. A day later, on September 14, Microsoft published something concrete: a first draft Code of Conduct for its own AI models, open for public comment for six weeks before anything gets locked in.
Nadella put it plainly. If the AI a company builds is not helping people and staying under human control, it is not worth building in the first place.
What stands out to me is how fast this shifted. A year ago the whole industry story was speed above everything. Now the CEOs of Anthropic and Microsoft are both saying, in public, maybe we ease off a little and let the guardrails catch up.
Every lab probably will not follow through at the same pace. But two of the biggest names in the room agreeing out loud gives regulators, employees, and the rest of us something real to point to instead of a hypothetical. That counts for something.
