If you use Claude Code every day, you probably felt this change before reading about it anywhere. On September 14, Anthropic cut the weekly usage limits on Claude Code by seventeen percent.
Here is the confusing part. Anthropic is also calling this a twenty five percent increase, and that is true too. Back in May, Anthropic ran a temporary fifty percent boost on top of the normal weekly allowance, and kept extending it through the summer. That boost expired on September 13. What replaces it is a permanent bump of twenty five percent over the original baseline from before May, smaller than the fifty percent boost people had gotten used to all summer.
So compared to the baseline from before May, you have more room to work with. Compared to the boosted level that just expired, you have less. Both numbers are real, they are just measured from different starting lines.
People noticed right away, and they were not thrilled about how it got announced. The first post led with the twenty five percent number and barely mentioned the drop against the boosted level. Anthropic pulled that post and reposted it with the seventeen percent cut spelled out plainly.
I get why folks are annoyed. Nobody likes finding out their tool got smaller through the fine print. Running these models at scale costs real money, and a temporary boost was always going to end eventually. Anthropic could have led with the number that actually affects people day to day instead of the one that reads best in a headline.
Credit where it is due, once people called it out, Anthropic reposted with the real number front and center instead of digging in further. That is a small thing, but it is the right instinct to have.
