China’s Nvidia Challenger Just Filed for an IPO

A Shanghai chip designer most people outside China have never heard of just filed to go public in Hong Kong, and the timing tells you a lot about where this race is headed.

MetaX makes GPUs built to replace Nvidia hardware inside Chinese data centers. Its current chip runs at roughly three quarters of the performance of an Nvidia A100, which sounds modest until you remember Beijing has been pushing its AI companies hard to stop buying Nvidia altogether. Performance gaps like that used to be a dealbreaker. Now they are just a cost of doing business under the current rules.

The company is working with Huatai International on the filing and wants the listing done by the end of the year. It already debuted on Shanghai’s tech focused Star Market earlier this year, and revenue more than doubled last year even as it kept posting a loss, the classic shape of a company racing to build capacity before the market it depends on changes the rules again.

It is not alone. Biren and Moore Threads, two other Chinese GPU makers, are running the same fundraising playbook right now, all of them trying to grab capital while investor appetite for anything labeled AI chips is still red hot.

Whatever you think about the politics behind it, this is what decoupling actually looks like on the ground. Three separate chip companies quietly lining up money so an entire country’s AI industry can eventually run without needing Nvidia’s permission. It is a genuinely big shift, and it is happening through IPO paperwork filed in Hong Kong this week, a lot quieter than the export ban headlines that usually carry this story.

Watch what happens to that A100-level chip over the next couple of launches. Every generation that closes the gap with Nvidia a little more makes the eventual split a little less painful for the companies forced into it, and a little more permanent for the rest of the industry.
