Anthropic’s bankers started putting institutional investors in a room this week, and that is usually the tell that an IPO is no longer just a rumor.
These meetings come before the formal roadshow, the stage where a company’s underwriters quietly gauge how much appetite big funds actually have before anyone commits to a price. Anthropic was valued at 965 billion dollars after its Series H round back in May, and some of the numbers floating around now put a public listing north of a trillion.
Fall is the target, with a public filing possibly landing in August or September and pricing sometime in October or November if nothing slips, and something almost always slips in IPOs this size.
Step back and the size of this is hard to fully picture. A company that did not exist before 2021 is walking toward one of the largest public offerings in US market history, built almost entirely on selling access to a model. Three years ago that sentence would have sounded like science fiction.
What is easy to miss in the trillion dollar headline is what actually got them here. Real revenue, real enterprise contracts, real teams inside banks and hospitals and law firms running Claude on real work every day. The valuation is a bet on that continuing, and given how fast the tools have improved this year, it is not a crazy bet to make. It is a big number attached to a real business, which is rarer in this industry than people like to admit.
Whether the stock pops on day one or not almost misses the point. A private lab built on research papers and safety pledges is about to hand its books to public markets and let anyone with a brokerage account own a piece of it. That is a strange and kind of wonderful turn for a company that started out mostly worried about whether AI would be safe enough to build at all.
