Anthropic Just Locked In 401 Megawatts

Anthropic signed a $19 billion, 20-year data center lease with TeraWulf. That is one number. The actual story is what it means.

The facility is in Hawesville, Kentucky on the site of an old aluminum smelter. 401 megawatts of computing power. Initial capacity starts in the second half of 2027, fully online in 2028.

This deal matters because it is not a partnership. Anthropic is not betting on someone else’s infrastructure. It is locking down its own capacity for two decades. When you are racing for compute to train the next generation of models, capacity guarantees are as valuable as capital itself.

The timing is also interesting. This comes after Anthropic has already raised $65 billion this year. The company is not just talking about scaling. It is laying concrete and installing power lines.

The crypto miners that owned TeraWulf turned their infrastructure into AI capacity. That shift tells you where the money actually flows now. Compute is the constraint. Compute is the advantage. Teams that own their infrastructure do not compete on model architecture alone. They compete on what they can afford to train and run.
