A Finnish company called Verda just raised $189 million and crossed the line into unicorn territory, valued at over a billion dollars. It builds what people are calling a full stack AI cloud, basically the compute layer that other AI companies rent to train and run their models.

Emergence Capital led the round. Investors also included MUFG Innovation Partners, Super Micro Computer, and a Finnish pension fund, Varma. A pension fund putting money into GPU infrastructure tells you something about how mainstream this category has become. It is not just venture money chasing a trend anymore.

The numbers behind the raise are worth sitting with. Verda’s annualized revenue run rate hit $165 million back in July, and the company has now pulled in more than $450 million total across equity and debt. That is a lot of capital going into buying and running chips.

For a while, investors treated this kind of business, buying racks of GPUs and renting out the compute, as too expensive to bother with. Verda raising this much, this fast, says that view has flipped. Demand for AI compute keeps outrunning the supply of places to run it, and somebody has to build the data centers to close that gap.

Europe does not have many homegrown AI infrastructure companies at this scale, most of the giants in this space are American or Chinese. A Helsinki company becoming a unicorn on the strength of AI cloud demand is a small but real sign that the compute race is not entirely a two country story.

I like seeing money go toward the unglamorous plumbing of AI rather than just another chatbot. Every model anyone uses has to run somewhere. Somebody building that somewhere, and doing it well enough to pull in a pension fund’s money, is a good bet on where this industry actually needs investment.
