Sora was the demo that made everyone pay attention. It was the one that felt real.
But OpenAI just discontinued it. Web and app went dark on April 26. The API dies September 24.
What happened? The honest version: it was too expensive to run at any volume that made money. Video generation burns GPU power like nothing else. In late 2025, Sora’s head imposed strict generation limits because of chip shortages. Then the math got worse.
Downloads peaked at 3.3 million in November 2025. By February 2026, they were down to 1.1 million. The in-app purchases that were supposed to fund it generated $2.1 million total. Against what the compute bill was actually running, that’s not a business. That’s a hobby.
So OpenAI made the choice: pull the resources. The GPUs went to text, reasoning, and coding models where the usage density is higher and the willingness to pay is real.
Here’s what matters: this isn’t a failure of the technology. It’s a failure of the motion. Video generation is real. It’s just not the money motion right now. The capital follows the use case where the actual customer sits.
The next video AI won’t come from OpenAI. It’ll come from whoever figures out why people actually want it.
