Six months ago these two men were openly at odds. Dario Amodei, who runs Anthropic, had been warning that AI companies need to slow down. Trump had been saying the opposite, that slowing down just hands the race to China.
A federal court sided with the Pentagon over Anthropic in a supply chain dispute. The administration had sanctioned Anthropic earlier this year after the company refused to let its tools be used for autonomous weapons or domestic mass surveillance. It was not a friendly relationship.
So it says something that Amodei is now heading to a private dinner at the White House with Trump, their first one-on-one meeting. Axios broke the story, and CNBC, Forbes, and Al Jazeera have all since confirmed the dinner is happening.
Trump has also mentioned a bigger meeting this week with House Speaker Mike Johnson and other AI executives. So this dinner might be less about resolving anything specific and more about testing whether the two of them can sit in the same room without it turning into another public fight.
Nobody is pretending the disagreement is settled. Amodei still thinks the pace of AI development needs limits. Trump still thinks new rules just slow America down while China keeps building. Neither man is going to change his mind over dinner.
But they are sitting at the same table, and after a year of lawsuits, sanctions, and public jabs, that is not nothing. A dinner will not fix export controls or settle the safety debate. But it is a lot harder to fully write someone off once you have shared a meal with them. Thaws like this rarely happen all at once, and this looks like a decent place to start.
