This Startup Is Betting Big on Light, Not Wires

Every big AI data center has the same boring problem: the wires. Copper cables that move data between chips get hot, they take up space, and past a certain distance they just cannot keep up with how fast AI clusters need to talk to each other.

Ayar Labs thinks light is the fix. The startup builds what is called co-packaged optics, tiny optical engines that sit right next to the chip and swap electrical signals for fiber. It just added another 150 million dollars to its Series E, on top of the 500 million it raised back in March, bringing its 2026 total to 650 million dollars raised so far this year alone.

The backers are worth noting. Nvidia, AMD, Intel, and MediaTek have all put money into Ayar Labs, which is unusual since those companies compete hard against each other everywhere else. When your fiercest rivals all agree to fund the same plumbing company, that tells you something about how real the bottleneck actually is.

The company also opened a new design center in Bengaluru to grow its engineering team, and it is aiming to get this technology into mass production by early 2028. That is not tomorrow. Building manufacturing-ready photonics at scale is a genuinely hard problem, and a lot of well-funded optics startups have stumbled trying to get there before.

Still, the fact that nearly every major chipmaker is hedging its bets on the same light-based approach says the industry sees the copper wall coming from a mile away. If Ayar Labs pulls this off, the AI boom keeps scaling. If it does not, someone else building the same idea probably will. Either way, the wires as we know them are on borrowed time.
