There is a new national mission, and AI is at the center of it.
The White House launched the Genesis Initiative, and Google DeepMind is backing it. The goal is to turn AI loose on the hardest scientific problems: biology, chemistry, materials science, energy, climate.
They built two tools to start with. AlphaEvolve is a Gemini-powered coding agent that designs algorithms and runs experiments. AlphaGenome is a model trained to understand the parts of DNA that were not supposed to do anything. It turns out they do a lot.
The infrastructure is the U.S. Department of Energy’s seventeen national laboratories, plus universities and industry partners. That is not a startup project. That is a government-scale bet on AI for scientific discovery.
The hard part was never building a model that could understand biology. The hard part is building a system that can run experiments, interpret results, and adapt the experiment based on what it learns. That is what AlphaEvolve is trained to do.
This is the moment when AI moves from a tool you feed prompts to a tool that runs science. That changes the pace of discovery.
