The Internet’s Favorite Mystery AI Finally Has a Name

For almost a week, half the AI world was trying to figure out who built the mystery model everyone was suddenly using. It showed up on OpenRouter on August 20 with no company name attached, and it did not stay quiet for long. Within days it had climbed to the top of OpenRouter’s usage leaderboard, pulling in more than double the traffic of DeepSeek, on a model nobody could officially claim.

Turns out the answer is Z.ai. The Chinese lab confirmed to Bloomberg that Ox Alpha is a new entry in its GLM family, and it is doing something that arguably counts for more than the reveal itself: it is releasing the weights publicly.

That is the part worth sitting with. Anyone can top a leaderboard for a week, but open weights mean researchers, startups, and hobbyists everywhere can download the thing, run it, poke at it, and build on top of it without paying Z.ai a cent for access. Testers had already noticed the model handled coding and long documents impressively well, with a context window over a million tokens and support for text, images, and video.

We spend a lot of time talking about the handful of labs racing to build the single biggest model. This week is a good reminder that some of the most useful progress happens quietly, from teams that would rather ship something great and let the results speak for themselves.

A free, open, frontier level model showing up out of nowhere lowers the floor for what anyone building with AI can afford to do, whether that is a solo developer or a small team with no compute budget to speak of. That kind of access spreading around is worth being a little excited about.
