Samsung Health just updated its terms. If you use Samsung Health and you don’t agree to let them train AI on your data, your synced health data gets deleted. Not the local data on your phone, but everything in the cloud. All your step counts, sleep logs, medication tracking, cycle history, the full biometric record that came from years of living your life. Gone.
Here is what I find interesting about this: it is not dishonest. Samsung explicitly tells you what happens. You say no to AI training, your data goes away. You say yes, they keep it and use it to build models. Most companies slide the knife in quietly. Samsung just opened the choice in front of you and called it a choice.
But that is not actually a choice. Data has value once it is in the cloud. You are not choosing between giving up data and keeping it. You are choosing between handing it to Samsung’s AI team or losing it forever. That is coercion with a customer service smile.
The part worth thinking about: where does this go? If Samsung does it with health, does Apple do it with fitness data? Does Google do it with location history? Does every company with years of historical data suddenly make AI training the price of keeping the data you already gave them?
That is where the real power sits. Not in the new data they collect going forward, but in what they already own of you from the past.
