OpenAI just filed confidentially for an IPO targeting September 2026.
The company is aiming for a valuation between $730 billion and $850 billion, with Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley handling the deal. That is not speculation anymore. The S-1 is in the SEC filing system as of June 8.
The big question is whether AI company economics actually work at this scale. Revenue is growing, but so are compute costs. A $730 billion company needs to prove it can stay ahead of the arithmetic. Wall Street will want to see unit economics that do not just rely on scale and dominance forever.
Analysts covering the deal expect the opening day to push past $1 trillion in market cap. If that happens, OpenAI becomes one of the five largest IPOs in US history. That is not a financial outcome anymore. It is a statement about how much of the global economy we think will run on AI inference.
This also tests whether the regulatory environment is ready for public AI companies. The same week Anthropic’s models got shut down by Commerce, we are about to see OpenAI step into the spotlight. Timing matters.
