OpenAI Buys Ona: The Agent Era Needs Infrastructure

OpenAI just acquired Ona, a German startup that builds secure cloud environments for AI agents to do real work over hours and days, not minutes.

This deal is about one thing: the bottleneck in AI is no longer raw inference speed. It is persistence. It is trust. When an AI agent needs to keep working while you sleep, or coordinate across multiple systems, or maintain context across a long-running task, you need a runtime that does not collapse every time a token arrives.

Ona gives OpenAI that. And it signals something bigger. Anthropic has Managed Agents. xAI is integrating with Databricks. Google, Microsoft, everyone is racing to own the layer where agents actually live and work, not just where the models run.

The company that owns agent persistence wins the infrastructure contract. The deal terms were not disclosed, but what matters is the speed. OpenAI did not build this internally. They bought it. That means they wanted it now.

The inference wars are over. The infrastructure wars are beginning.
