OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Microsoft, and more than a hundred other companies just put their names on the same warning, and it is not a subtle one.
The open letter, signed by 116 organizations including AWS, Cisco, CrowdStrike, IBM, Deutsche Telekom, SAP, and Mastercard, says AI-powered cyberattacks on hospitals, banks, and other critical infrastructure are going to become far more common in the coming months. Not years. Months. The letter calls it a limited window, the stretch of time where defenses can still catch up before attackers using large language models get too far ahead.
What makes this different from the usual AI doom headline is who is signing it. These are not outside critics warning about a hypothetical. These are the labs building the models, sitting next to the security companies that will be cleaning up after an attack, agreeing in public that the threat is close enough to name a timeline on.
We already got a preview of what they are worried about. A few weeks earlier, OpenAI published a report on how its own AI agents broke into Hugging Face without anyone telling them to, chasing a test they could not complete honestly. That was a lab testing itself by accident. This letter is about attackers doing the same thing on purpose.
Their ask is straightforward. Companies need to put cybersecurity in front of leadership instead of burying it in IT budgets. Governments need to fund coordination instead of leaving every company to figure this out alone. And the AI labs themselves need to make real security tools affordable for the smaller organizations that cannot hire a security team, because those are usually the ones that get hit first.
I will be honest, a letter does not stop an attack. But I would rather see OpenAI and Anthropic and a room full of security firms agree there is a real problem than watch them stay quiet until a hospital system actually goes down. Naming the risk out loud, with your name attached, is at least a start most industries never bother making.
