Nvidia, the Korean internet giant Naver, and the investment firm Brookfield just agreed to triple the size of a data center campus in Sejong, South Korea, taking it from 55 megawatts to 200 megawatts. The total price tag on this expansion is 10 billion dollars.
Break down who is paying for what and the deal gets interesting. Brookfield is putting up as much as 9 billion dollars as the exclusive money partner behind the buildout. Nvidia is chipping in a billion dollars of its own and supplying the technology, a platform it calls DSX that is built to design and scale these AI factories fast. Naver covers the rest and keeps running the country’s dominant search and AI services on top of infrastructure it actually controls.
That word, controls, is the whole point here. This is what people mean when they say sovereign AI. South Korea does not want to run its national digital life on servers sitting in someone else’s country, subject to someone else’s rules. Building the capacity at home, even with outside partners and outside cash, keeps the actual switch in Korean hands.
It is easy to read stories like this as just another big number in an industry full of big numbers. But zoom out and this is countries deciding, one data center at a time, whether they want to rent their AI future or own it. Korea picked owning it, and it found partners willing to help foot a ten figure bill to make that happen.
Nvidia keeps showing up in these deals not just as a chip vendor anymore. It is becoming the company that helps entire nations build the ground floor. That is a different kind of power than selling GPUs, and it is worth watching who else lines up to make the same bet.
