Meta’s New Coding Agent Comes With a Data Catch

Meta just put its first real coding agent into beta, and it picked a strange way to compete. The product is called Muse Code, a terminal tool that plans out changes, writes code, and checks its own work across big repositories, running its own sub agents in parallel when a job is large enough to need them. It runs on a new model called Muse Spark 1.2, and it is aimed straight at Claude Code and Codex.

The part that actually got people talking is the pricing. Muse Code has two tiers. The standard one costs $1.25 per million input tokens and $4.25 per million output tokens, and Meta says nothing you type there gets used to train future models. Then there is the contributor tier, running around a tenth of that cost, sometimes twenty times cheaper depending on what you are counting. The catch sits right in the name. You get the discount by agreeing to let Meta train on your prompts and the code it writes back to you.

Meta’s AI chief Alexandr Wang framed it as a straightforward tradeoff, cheaper access in exchange for data that helps the model improve. That is an honest way to put it, and I would rather a company say the quiet part out loud than bury it in a terms of service update six months later.

Still, this is worth sitting with for a second. A lot of us will take the cheaper option without thinking hard about what our actual codebase is worth once it becomes training data for a competitor’s future coding agent. Company secrets, internal tools, half finished features, all of it flows through a terminal window.

The upside is real too. Cheap, capable coding tools mean more people building things who could not afford the premium tier before. I just want people picking the cheap lane to actually know what they handed over to get there.
