Elon Musk said Grok 4.7 would land by September 12. That date came and went. Nothing shipped.
On September 11, Musk posted on X that the model needs a few more days to cook. His words were that the team may have penalized response length too aggressively during training, so the model gives up on hard problems it can actually solve, and it is not rigorous enough about checking its own work before answering.
This is not the first slip either. Back in July, Musk said the model was about four weeks out. A few days later that became a few weeks. When Grok 4.6 shipped in August, the estimate reset to three or four weeks out again. Then on September 2 he promised ten days. That is the promise that just expired.
Grok 4.7 is supposed to be a real jump, 2.1 trillion parameters, trained in part on SpaceX engineering data. That is a genuine technical push, not a small update. xAI has not published a model card, pricing, or benchmarks yet, so there is nothing to measure against besides the promise itself.
That is where I land on this one. Every serious lab hits the same wall eventually. The model looks great until you actually try to ship it, and that is exactly when the rough edges show up. Musk choosing to hold it back instead of pushing out something half finished is the right call, even if his timeline guesses keep missing.
Being late because you caught a real problem beats being on time with a model that quits on hard questions. I would rather wait a little longer for the version that actually checks its own work before it hands me an answer.
