You know that thing where you think Anthropic and OpenAI are competitors? That stopped being true this week.
Both companies have frontier models in limbo. Anthropic’s Fable and Mythos got pulled June 12. OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 is now gated to 20 government-approved companies. Both sit behind the same bottle neck: the U.S. government’s approval process.
The approval process itself is broken. It is ad hoc. It moves slowly. It blocks releases not based on technical safety but on political pressure. Every lab that has to go through it pays the same tax: opportunity cost, uncertainty, market timing in the hands of people who did not build the models.
Here is what matters. There is no fix that helps one lab without helping the others. Both Anthropic and OpenAI want the same thing: a faster, clearer, consistent evaluation framework that lets them know what they can ship and when. They share the same enemy: opacity from Washington.
The real competitive game is not between these two labs anymore. It is between the U.S. labs, which move through government checkpoints, and the labs in Europe and Asia and everywhere else that can move faster because no government is stage-gating their releases yet.
