Google Missed Its Own Deadline on Gemini 3.5 Pro

Back in May at Google I/O, Sundar Pichai showed off Gemini 3.5 Pro and said “Give us until next month to get it to you.” That line drew audible groans from the live audience. Next month was June. It is now June 21, 2026.

Gemini 3.5 Pro is still in limited Vertex AI enterprise preview. It has not shipped to the public Gemini app, Google AI Studio, or the free Gemini subscription. The promised June release window has come and gone.

The model itself works. It ships to enterprise customers today. But Google made a public commitment and missed it.

Prediction markets put the odds at 50-55% that it ships by June 30. So it might still land before month’s end, but the CEO’s “next month” promise from May 19 has already elapsed.

Shipping velocity is now a competitive advantage in AI. Anthropic and OpenAI move fast. They announce, ship, iterate. Google still moves like a large organization: committees, stakeholder reviews, launch windows, GTM planning. By the time Google ships Gemini 3.5 Pro, Anthropic will have shipped something newer.

The market is already punishing delays. ChatGPT’s market share fell below 50% for the first time in three years. That does not happen because a product got worse. It happens because other products shipped faster.

Google has the best researchers, the most compute, and the biggest budget. What it does not have is speed. And in AI right now, speed wins everything else.

Missing a public deadline by three weeks is a signal that echoes through the entire market.
