For a long time, Google had a simple rule for its own people: build with Gemini, full stop. Employees weren’t allowed to touch outside coding tools like Claude Code or OpenAI’s Codex. If you wanted a taste of Claude, you basically had to be on a short list.
That rule just quietly loosened. Google opened up access to Claude Opus 5 for every engineer, through its own internal tool called Antigravity. Not a leak, not a workaround. An actual, sanctioned door.
Google is still saying Gemini is the main model for internal work, and I believe them, it’s still the default. But you don’t hand your own engineers a competitor’s model unless there’s a real reason. Engineers had been asking for it, and apparently the asking worked.
What I like about this one is what it says without saying it. Big companies love to talk about how confident they are in their own stack. Then behind closed doors, they give their own people a taste of what the other guy built, because the work has to get done well, not just get done in-house.
There’s a usage quota per employee, so it’s not unlimited, and Claude Code itself still isn’t on the table, just Opus 5 inside Antigravity. Small print aside, this is Google admitting, in action if not in words, that the AI coding race doesn’t have one clean winner right now.
Good for engineers everywhere honestly. Competition inside the walls of a company this size usually means better tools end up in more hands, including the ones we all use eventually.
Think about how strange this would have sounded a couple years ago. One of the biggest AI labs on the planet quietly telling its own staff, go ahead, use the other company’s model when ours doesn’t cut it for the job in front of you. That’s not weakness, that’s just being honest about where the frontier actually sits right now, and honesty like that tends to produce better products for the rest of us waiting on the outside.
