Google, Amazon, Microsoft, and Meta have spent a combined 1.1 trillion dollars on AI infrastructure since 2023, and a new report says they’re on pace to add another 745 billion dollars in 2026 alone. Read that second number again slowly. One year is set to nearly match everything the four of them spent across the three years before it, combined.
Amazon is targeting around 200 billion dollars in spending this year. Microsoft is tracking toward roughly 190 billion. Google is somewhere around 175 to 185 billion, and Meta is guiding toward 115 to 135 billion. That money is going into data centers, the chips that fill them, and the power plants and grid upgrades needed to actually run all of it.
It’s easy to read a number like this as pure excess, and some of it probably is. Building this much this fast almost guarantees some of it gets built in the wrong place or at the wrong time. But the backlogs tell a different story too. These companies are signing contracts for AI compute years out, which means real customers are lining up to pay for what gets built, not just executives betting on vibes.
What I keep coming back to is what this actually becomes. It isn’t spending that disappears, it’s data centers, chips, and power infrastructure that stick around for a decade or more. Even if the AI boom cools off at some point, that physical buildout doesn’t vanish. It becomes the backbone that the next wave of technology, whatever it turns out to be, gets built on top of.
A trillion dollars is a hard number to feel anything about. But somewhere near a new data center site, that number is also a construction job, a new substation, and a tax base that wasn’t there two years ago.
