DeepMind tests AI planning tool to speed UK decisions

Google DeepMind says it is testing a new AI planning assistant with the UK government, with help from Google Cloud, Faculty, and several local planning authorities.

The effort is focused on places including Barnet, Dorset, and Camden. DeepMind says the prototype is meant to support planning officers by pulling useful information out of submitted documents and then analyzing cases in a more structured way.

The practical aim is to reduce how long it takes to decide on householder applications. DeepMind’s stated goal is a 50% cut in decision times. For residents, that matters because planning delays can drag out everything around home changes, from repairs and extensions to other everyday moves.

It’s also a common pressure point for local offices, which often handle large volumes of paperwork while still needing to review each case carefully. If the tool can reliably speed up the early work—like sorting details and highlighting relevant information—officers may have more time to focus on the decisions themselves.

DeepMind frames the project as an assistant, not a replacement. The testing work with the UK government and local authorities suggests it’s currently being evaluated in a real-world workflow, where performance and usefulness will be judged against how planning teams actually process applications.

As the trial progresses, the main thing people will watch is whether faster processing comes with the level of care decision-makers need. Cutting timelines is a clear target, but planning outcomes still depend on proper review and sound judgment.
