OpenAI just turned ChatGPT into a login button.
Starting this week, you can use “Sign in with ChatGPT” to create or link an account on sites like Airtable, GitLab, HubSpot, Notion, Supabase, and Vercel. Instead of typing a password or juggling another Google login, you just confirm through ChatGPT and you’re in, no new account form, no new password to forget in three months.
The company says the app on the other end only gets your name, email, and profile picture if you have one. Nothing else gets shared, no chat history, no files, none of what you’ve actually talked to ChatGPT about.
This is a bigger move than it looks like at first glance. Google and Apple have owned the “sign in with” button for years, and it quietly made them the gatekeepers for a huge share of the internet. Every app that added that button gave those two companies a small piece of the relationship with the user. OpenAI wants that same piece of real estate, and it’s starting with developer tools people already live in every day, the kind of tools builders open before their coffee is even done.
If this spreads past the six partners it launched with, ChatGPT stops being just a chat window and starts acting like a digital ID card. That is a real shift in how much trust and daily use OpenAI is asking people to hand over, well beyond writing an email or debugging some code.
I get why some people will be uneasy handing one company that much control over the front door to their accounts. But the tool people open dozens of times a day was probably always going to end up carrying more weight than a chatbot eventually. It’s just happening a little faster than most of us expected.
Worth watching which sites join the list next, and how fast that list grows.
