Apple Just Sued OpenAI. Here Is Why.

Apple filed a lawsuit against OpenAI on July 11. The accusation: systematic theft of Apple trade secrets. This is not a small claim. Apple says OpenAI has been recruiting Apple engineers across all levels, from staff through the Chief Hardware Officer level, and they have been extracting information about unreleased products. Not recruiting people who know things. Extracting information as part of a coordinated campaign.

Apple named names. Tang Tan, OpenAI’s hardware chief and a former Apple VP. Chang Liu, an employee who allegedly stole an Apple laptop when he left. Apple says OpenAI coached departing employees on how to evade security processes when they left the company. The company helped people circumvent the systems that protect confidential information. They built a process around it.

This is not a personal beef between CEOs. The real story started last year when OpenAI bought Jony Ive’s design studio IO Products for 6.4 billion dollars. That was the moment Apple realized OpenAI was not just hiring engineers. They were building a hardware company. A direct competitor to Apple.

Apple is not complaining about poaching. Poaching happens everywhere. Apple is saying OpenAI ran something different. A systematic extraction program targeting hardware teams, silicon design, on-device AI, industrial design. The complaint says it happened at every level. That is corporate espionage language. That is what you say when you think you have been infiltrated.

OpenAI says they have no interest in stealing trade secrets and remain focused on building innovation. The lawsuit goes before the Northern California federal court. This will take years.
