Anthropic just locked in one of the biggest compute deals anyone has signed this year. Forty five billion dollars, over six years, for capacity at a data center Nscale is building out in West Virginia. The power alone, something like 460 megawatts, is enough to run a small city, and all of it is going toward keeping Claude’s servers fed.
Here is the part that stands out to me. This is not Anthropic buying chips outright. It is renting capacity years before the machines even finish going up. Nscale will build the site around Nvidia’s newest Vera Rubin chips, and none of it starts actually running Anthropic’s workloads until sometime in late 2027.
That is a long bet on a company that has not finished proving it can keep pace with demand today. Anthropic has already said growth in Claude usage put what it called inevitable strain on its existing capacity. This is the fourth or fifth deal like this in the past year, after agreements with Google, AMD, SpaceX, and Broadcom. Whatever you think about the pace of AI spending right now, this is what it looks like from the inside: a company betting that demand two years from now will dwarf demand today.
I get why people roll their eyes at another eye watering number in AI. But step back for a second. A British infrastructure company just landed a six year, forty five billion dollar contract to build in Appalachia. That is real construction jobs, real electricians, real concrete going into the ground, tied directly to a bet on American AI infrastructure.
The money has to land somewhere physical eventually. This time it is landing in West Virginia, and a lot of people there are about to find out what an AI boom looks like when it shows up as a job site instead of a headline.
