Anthropic just asked SK Hynix for parts to build its own chips. Not buy more of somebody else’s supply. Build its own, from scratch.
SK Group’s chairman, Chey Tae Won, said it himself at an AI summit in San Francisco, standing right next to Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei. He called it remarkable that a company known for building AI models is now also trying to build the silicon those models run on.
Think about what that actually means. Anthropic already leans on Amazon’s Trainium chips and Google’s TPUs to train and run Claude. Now it wants a hand in the hardware supply chain itself, specifically the memory chips that make large scale AI training possible, the kind SK Hynix is one of the biggest producers of anywhere in the world.
This isn’t coming out of nowhere either. SK Hynix put money into Anthropic’s last funding round back in May, alongside Samsung and Micron. And reports as far back as April had already pointed to Anthropic quietly exploring its own custom ASICs and GPUs. OpenAI, Google, Amazon, they’re all doing some version of the same move: trying to own more of the stack instead of renting all of it.
The honest read is that everyone in this race is realizing the model itself is only half the business. Whoever controls the chips controls the price, the speed, and the leverage when supply runs tight. Anthropic doesn’t want to be stuck waiting in line behind everyone else for Nvidia’s GPUs or anyone else’s production schedule.
It’s a good sign, honestly. More companies building real hardware, not just software wrapped around someone else’s chips, usually means more competition. More competition usually means prices come down over time and progress doesn’t bottleneck at one company’s factory floor. That’s good news for anyone who actually uses this stuff day to day, which by now is basically everyone reading this.
