Anthropic sat down and built three different pictures of where this whole AI thing takes the economy by 2030. Not one forecast. Three, side by side, so you can poke at the assumptions yourself instead of trusting somebody’s press release.
The mild version says AI ends up mattering about as much as the internet did. Nice bump, nothing that rewrites anybody’s life plans, GDP a bit higher than it would have been otherwise.
The middle version has AI doing something like half of all the knowledge work happening in America by the end of the decade. Growth roughly doubles its normal pace. Unemployment settles up near 5 percent. Pay for a lot of office and desk jobs just sits flat while the work underneath them keeps changing shape.
Then there is the extreme case. GDP lands around 44 trillion dollars, a third higher than the no-AI baseline. That is the scenario where a huge slice of cognitive work stops needing a human at all, and unemployment climbs past anything the country has dealt with since before most of us were born.
What I like about this release is that Anthropic did not just publish a number and walk off. They asked almost 11,000 regular Americans what they expect to happen by 2030, then lined those answers up against the three scenarios. Most people are already expecting something close to the middle path. About a tenth are bracing for the extreme one.
Nobody actually knows which of these three we are walking into yet, and it is refreshing to see a lab say that plainly instead of picking the version that sells best. If your own career plans or your kid’s college major depend on the answer, this is worth ten minutes of your own time rather than taking my word for it.
