Americans Have Given Up on AI

A new survey hit the news on June 17 with a number that should concern every AI company in the world: only 16 percent of Americans think AI’s impact on society in the next 20 years will be positive.

About 40 percent expect it to be negative.

This is a turning point. Not “AI is overhyped.” Not “slow down the hype.” The public is now expecting harm.

It makes sense. The news cycle has been relentless: layoffs tied to AI, models getting banned by governments, deepfakes, manipulation, surveillance. The gloss came off the story. The public moved from curiosity to skepticism.

For builders, this matters because policy follows sentiment. Regulators watch public opinion. If Americans expect AI to harm them, they will vote for restrictions. If they expect privacy violations, they will demand protection. The business environment is about to get harder because the permission structure is breaking down.

The time for “but think of the benefits” is ending. The time for “here is how we prevent harm” is starting.
