AMD Finally Built Something Nvidia Should Worry About

AMD stopped playing catch up this week.

At its Advancing AI event, CEO Lisa Su unveiled Helios, a full rack-scale AI system built to go head to head with Nvidia’s Vera Rubin. Seventy two Instinct MI455X chips, 31 terabytes of memory, all wired together with AMD’s own networking and software stack.

Su says Helios beats Vera Rubin by 15 percent on raw compute, 50 percent on memory, and 30 percent on tokens per dollar. Big claims, but the part that matters more is who is already buying it. Microsoft signed on. So did Oracle. OpenAI, Meta, and Anthropic are named as customers too, and that is the detail worth sitting with: the very labs that built their businesses on Nvidia chips are now spreading their bets.

None of this means Nvidia is in trouble tomorrow. Vera Rubin still ships, still dominates the order books, still runs most of the world’s frontier training. But for the first time in a while, a data center buyer has a second real option sitting on the shelf next to it, not just on a slide deck.

That competition is good news for anyone who wants AI to keep getting cheaper. Training a frontier model costs more than most companies will ever spend on anything else. If two chip makers are actually fighting for that business instead of one just setting the price, that cost comes down for everybody building on top of it eventually, including the small teams and solo builders who never get invited to the keynote.

Nvidia has heard this song before from smaller rivals and shrugged it off plenty of times. This one is different because the buyers are not scrappy startups looking to save a few dollars. They are the same handful of giants who spent the last three years writing Nvidia enormous checks, and now they clearly want a second supplier they can lean on if prices climb or supply gets tight again. That kind of leverage is worth more to them than any single benchmark number.
