Alibaba dropped a new model called Qwen3.8-Max, and the numbers on it are wild. 2.4 trillion parameters, and it’s already beating or matching Anthropic’s top model on a chunk of benchmarks, including one that checks whether a model can actually reproduce real scientific research.

The bigger news isn’t just the parameter count. It’s that Alibaba plans to open the weights next week, letting anyone download the model, run it themselves, and change it however they want. OpenAI and Anthropic don’t do that. Their best models stay locked behind an API.

Investors noticed. Alibaba’s stock jumped on the news, part of a bigger pattern this year of Chinese labs putting out models that are free to use and shockingly close to the American frontier.

I want to be honest about the catch here. These are Alibaba’s own benchmark numbers. Nobody outside the company has run an independent check yet, so treat the comparisons to Anthropic with a little patience until that happens.

Even with that caveat, something real is happening. A year ago, open and free usually meant a few steps behind. That gap is closing fast, and it’s closing from a country a lot of people assumed was still years out from the frontier.

I think that’s good for the rest of us, honestly. More competition and more open options usually means better tools land in normal people’s hands faster and cheaper. A student in Lagos or a small shop in Manila gets the same weights as a big lab in California, for free, to build whatever they want on top of.

Keep an eye on the independent benchmarks when they actually land. That’s when we’ll know if the hype matches the paper. Until then, file this under impressive but unverified, and watch what happens to pricing across the whole industry once those weights are actually out in the wild.
