OpenAI Is Adding Ads Right Next To Your ChatGPT Images

OpenAI just told advertisers they are getting a new spot inside ChatGPT. Starting later this month, in the US, a small test group of brands will get visual ads sitting next to the images ChatGPT generates for you.

OpenAI says the ad stays labeled and stays separate from the picture itself, it will not creep into the artwork or change what the model draws for you. Think of it like a sponsored card sitting next to your photo on the wall, not a watermark stamped on top of it.

They have also lined up partners like Haus, Measured and WorkMagic to help brands run geo based tests, basically figuring out which city sees which ad and whether it actually moves anyone to buy something real.

When a free product starts showing ads, people assume it is getting worse. Usually it just means the product got popular enough that someone has to pay for all that compute. ChatGPT is handling over a billion messages a week now. Something has to cover that electric bill, and it was never going to run on pure goodwill forever.

I use ChatGPT’s image tool constantly, for client work, for my own projects, for dumb memes at midnight when I cannot sleep. An ad sitting next to the result does not bother me much, as long as it stays out of the actual image, and so far that is the promise on the table.

The bigger story here is where OpenAI is headed as a business. Free tier paid for by ads, paid tier kept clean of them. That is the same deal every big platform has made for twenty years, just running on a newer kind of engine.
